A RESPONSE TO GRIEF

“For in grief nothing "stays put." One keeps on emerging from a phase, but it always recurs. Round and round. Everything repeats. Am I going in circles, or dare I hope I am on a spiral?

A Response to Grief was inspired after reading A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis and reflecting on his experience of bereavement. The series explores the loneliness of mourning through abstraction, translating emotional experience into material form.

The artist created her own paint formula to manipulate the behaviour of the materials, making them more fluid, fragile and unpredictable.

Elements of order and disorder meet through chemical reactions and deterioration, pouring though the canvas to express yearning and dissociation waves felt from bereavement.

Prior to this body of work, Coble worked exclusively with photography. A Response to Grief , embracing painting as a more physical process and personal reflection.

This intentional process allows the materials to embody the chaos, vulnerability and loss of control that often accompany grief.
